Greetings All, and welcome to the Vein-ette Project.
First off, a bit about the name.
In literature, a vignette is a short story focusing on a specific moment in time (Check out House on Mango Street for some examples). After much contemplation, I toyed with the name Vein-ette. What would it mean to me and to other aspiring writers? What would it mean to readers? Most of all, what would it mean to the world?
A vein-ette is a vignette with attitude. It's a story from any moment in time, but more than that it is a story that you feel has a lasting impact to leave on the world. It's a story that leaves behind tangible life.
Think about it. Stories, pieces of life are all around us. The ancient Egyptians used hieroglyphics to tell everything about themselves, even if it was just about when they slept and when they ate. It was still a way to show, as paraphrased from Life in a Day, "I was here. I mattered."
My challenge to you, the reader, is to come up with a short story based on a moment in your life. Center it around one idea if you can. Like love, loss, your favorite food, whatever. Then name a topic for the next writer, and so on.
The point is to have fun and learn about yourselves. If it matters to you, it will matter in the grander scheme of things.
